The Bulgarian Deodorant That You Eat
Add unrefined coconut oil, not melted, about a Tablespoon at a time, mashing with a fork until all the dry ingredients have been mixed in. I find it takes 4-6 Tablespoons. So when I stumbled upon this formula on Maggie`s blog (while searching for a sewing tutorial, of all things), I was instantly drawn to the idea: you simply mix coconut oil with baking soda and some kind of starch (such as arrowroot powder or cornstarch) to get a creamy lotion that will harden in the fridge (coconut oil solidifies gradually below 24.5°C / 76°F) and form a deodorant stone" that you can rub on like an ordinary deodorant.
And just in case you`re like me, and put off making homemade deodorant because you think it will be too hard, or take too much time, I just made up another batch this morning and it took me a total of less than 10 minutes, including taking pictures for this post!
When applying this deodorant, use a lighter hand than you would with normal stick deodorant, especially the first couple of days or it`ll drop little balls on your bathroom rug. I never thought I would make homemade deodorant spray deodorant, believe me, but as I told you Wednesday when we talked about hazards of antiperspirants , I wanted to make a baby step away from antiperspirant last December. Aughh I have tried using baking soda on my armpits…various recipes….I have had to endure pits of fire" for weeks!! After it sits 2-3 days it`s ready, spray your hunting area down good, spray your boots and pant legs.
Wash your Hands before and after applying so the deodorant stays clean, and your clothes will not get stained. And BTW, if the coconut allergy is when said husband"eats" coconut, it doesn`t necessarily mean it will cause problems on skin. The good thing about this method is it will get rid of smells and moisture, so it`ll act more like your regular stick deodorant. I thought maybe the anti-fungal properties of coconut oil had something to do with it working, but it`s probably just the baking soda (which is amazing stuff, actually…). While you may find the wetness to have a cooling sensation on the underarms, you may consider stick deodorant if you prefer a more solid application.
I have tried many different homemade deodorants and kept having horrible reactions or they didn`t work. Thanks for the recipe, I`m going to try yours because the deo I made didn`t have beeswax in it and I had to store it in the fridge. To begin your journey into the joys of home-made cosmetics, try this deodorant recipe - with the essential oils, it will smell so much nicer than commercial deodorants! Yes, if you add 2 teaspoons of beeswax pastilles it will firm enough to put in a tube.
You can stop here, or add in tea tree oil for extra odor fighting (it`s strong stuff, be careful, you really only need a few drops - for 1 oz, I do 5 drops). The problem I`m currently struggling with is that baking soda is gritty and if I wear a snug top, I get some painful chafing.
